zzz… Sleep!

Going on residential trips away from homestay can add a huge amount to your time abroad. We try to support this away much as possible. We may arrange trips ourselves. However, sometimes you may wish to travel independently. Here is some guidance to how this works.

General Principles

  1. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the following information applies to all students on our programmes – including those who are over 18.
  2. If you want to stay away overnight for any reason, you must inform us in advance, typically at least 2 days. You must also make your homestay host aware.
  3. Your parents will usually be asked to give us their consent.
  4. Hobstone take very seriously any situation in which a student stays away from homestay without prior approval.
  5. The following sections cover some specific examples.

Going on a pre-arranged weekend trip.

  • It is the student’s responsibility to tell use and the host of their wishes
  • You should make us aware of where you are staying and your travel plans.
  • We will work with you, your parents and study abroad partners to approve the request.
  • Assuming a request is approved, you and your homestay hosts will be made aware.
  • We will not always be able to take direct responsibility during your time away, hence the need to contact parents

Staying overnight at a friend’s house in the local area (not in another homestay supported by Hobstone).

  • This process is very similar to the process for weekend trips away. Students have a responsibility to seek approval in advance.

Staying overnight at a friend’s house in the local area (in a homestay supported by Hobstone).

  • In this case, you need to inform hobstone of your plans, but the process is usually simple and quick. Provided both hosts are happy no further action need be taken.

Going on a residential trip organised by your school or college.

  • Students should make us aware of any trips arranged by schools and College. Usually these will require parental consent for students aged under 18.

Going on a residential trip organised by your homestay host.

  • Some students are lucky enough that their hosts take them away for a night, or perhaps a weekend. If this happens, your hosts is responsible for informing Hobstone of their plans (in advance). We will in turn speak to study abroad partners and parents to approve arrangements.

Going out for the evening and deciding to stay at a friends house without prior planning or approval.

  • This is not allowed. This puts your homestay host in a legally vulnerable position and we do not believe that this is fair or courteous. THanks for understanding
