One of the best things about staying in homestay is being part of a home… even part of a new family. Think about how to play your part by helping out around the house.
How can you help?
- Be proactive. Talk to your host and ask if there is anything you can do to help.
- Stay alert to the little things. They can make a big difference. For example, offer to clear the table, take the bins out or help with the washing up.
- If your host asks you to help out, don’t be offended, it is ok to ask students to help with light chores in a similar way to how they would ask an older son or daughter.
- If you really feel that what you are being asked to do is unreasonable, talk to your host. If you still can’t find a good solution, talk to us.
- Take responsibility for keeping your own bedroom tidy and clean. Be aware that your host may sometimes need to enter you room.
- Some hosts will offer to make your bed for you, others may give you the sheets and ask you to put them on the bed yourself. Discuss what way works best for everyone.
- Make sure you respect communal areas of the house like the living room, kitchen etc. Treat them as if they were your home
- Ask your hosts about other house rules. For example, they may ask you to take your shoes off when you are in the house or avoid playing music after a certain time at night.
