Homestay is fantastic, but it will not always be perfect. Compromise, respect and openness will often be the key to solving any problems. Here are some tips for achieving this.

How to approach your hosts with problems.

As we all know, living with other people can sometimes be challenging. Here are some things to keep in mind about resolving problems and finding solutions that work for everyone.

  1. If you are unhappy don’t be afraid to tell your hosts, don’t wait too long to do this, but think about how this will make them feel and make sure you pick the right time.
  2. It is usually best to avoid difficult conversations late at night or when everyone is hungry or when they are very busy with other practical things like preparing meals.
  3. It can be especially hard (and often inappropriate) for people to have difficult conversations around children.
  4. Points of concern stem from a simple misunderstanding, particularly when people come from different countries and traditions. Remember, people don’t set out to cause problems for others!
  5. Take time to listen to your host’s point of view and try to properly understand what they are saying. Empathy.
  6. Don’t expect to get everything you ask for. Compromises are always a question of give and take.
  7. You deserve to be respected and listened to; you also have a responsibility to respect and listen to others.
  8. You can of course talk to us about any problems you are facing. However, part of living in homestay is learning to solve problems yourself. That means we will usually suggest that you talk to your hosts about issues before we do.

What if your hosts approach you?

You may find that your hosts approach you with a problem. This can be difficult, but as you can see above, it will also be hard for them.

  1. If your hosts tell you they have a concern, don’t be offended even if it comes as a shock.
  2. Don’t trivialise the problem. Even if you think it is small, it may be more important to them that you realise.
  3. Re-read the points above and think about it from the other way around.
  4. Remember the point about misunderstandings.
  5. If you think you are being unfairly treated talk to us, but again, you may be the best person to solve the problem.
  6. If you realise that you have made a mistake, or done something silly, it is usually best to admit it and to apologise.
