Ok, so being spontaneous is fun, but it is important to remember that there are times when we have to plan ahead, especially when other people are involved. Not knowing about student’s plans in advance is one of the biggest reasons for disagreements in homestay.
When to plan ahead.
- Your host has to plan meals in advance. Therefore, so should you. If you want to eat out you must tell your host in good time. Talk to them about what this means in practice.
- NEVER simply miss a meal without telling your host; If you are running late, let them know.
- In general, if you are going out tell your hosts when you plan to be home and give them some idea of your plans. If they change let them know as soon as possible.
- Some students like to take occasional trips away overnight. There is a formal approval process for this and you need to plan several days in advance to allow time for arrangements to be discussed. The process may differ depending on your programme, but planning is still important.
- Equally, some students arrange for guests to stay overnight. This is something that has to be approved by your host families. It is not always possible and you need to tell your hosts well in advance.
