Food is a big one – It is something we need everyday, no matter who we are or where we are. Here is some information about food and homestay. We outline what to expect and how to deal with any issues you may face.
If you have special dietary needs (for any reason) it is really important that you tell us. We will do everything we can to help cater for your needs. Often we will want to talk to you in advance to help understand things in more detail. We may also recommend that you talk to your hosts directly.
What Food is Provided?
The following food is usually provided for all homestay students.
- Breakfast 7 days per week.
- Evening Meal 7 days per week.
- Lunch at weekends & public holidays.
- One meal per day should be served hot.
- Usually you will be expected to make and serve your own breakfast.
- Evening meals will usually be made and served by your hosts, but they may occasionally make other arrangements.
- We encourage hosts to sit and eat with students as much as possible. However, this will not always be possible.
Avoiding Food Problems
Some people really like trying new food when they live abroad. others find it harder.
- Talk to your hosts about food you like and dislike.
- Be prepared to try new things. This is part of being in a new country.
- You should expect a varied and balanced diet, but a homestay is not a restaurant. You will need to work with your hosts to find out what food is right for you and fits in with the household. Remember give and take.
- Talk to us, if you feel there are significant problems that you cannot solve alone or with your host.
Student Snacks
All students are given space to store their own food. Usually in the kitchen, including fridge space.
- Having your own snacks can be a really good way to feel more at home. In fact, when not bring your favourite snacks from your home country to eat and share.
- Talk to your hosts about using the kitchen. Some hosts are happy for students to cook, many are not. Please respect this.
- You may also be asked not to store or eat snacks in your bedroom. Please respect this too.
- Generally speaking, it is a good idea to buy and store food for lunch. This will be cheaper than always eating out.
- Remember, any snacks are provided at your own expense
