Arrange a Home Visit

2
We will arrange to visit you at home. This is a chance to discuss hosting in more detail and get most paperwork out of the way!

Home visits are a chance for you to get to know us and our local representatives. They give you the opportunity to ask questions and to understand who we are and how we work. They enable us to go through any paperwork so that you can focus on the more human side of hosting!

Prepare for Arrival

After the home visit we will work with you to help complete any paperwork and support you in your preparations.

Types of Hosting

Long-Term Hosting

1
Long-Term hosting is for those who are able to look after students for up to a full academic year (typically September to June). Long-term students will have time to integrate themselves fully into family life. You will get to know them well, building a strong and valuable partnership.

  • All long-term students are at least 16 years old.
  • Usually students are between 16 and 19.
  • Students become a true part of the household and local community.
  • Students have time to join local clubs and groups.
  • Hosts are asked to help students understand their new environment and become more independent.
  • Where there are problems, there is time to work through them together.
  • Long-term students will always require their own study bedroom.

Short-Term Hosting

2
Short-term students will stay with hosts for a maximum of 28 days, but two weeks or less is more normal. Often they will be taking part in a study tour or summer school programme as part of a group. The aim is for them to get a taste for British life and homestay is a fantastic way to do this.

  • Short-term hosting involves looking after children, teenagers or young adults.
  • Hosts can specify which ages they are able to support.
  • The aim for short term hosting is to provide a safe, fun and inspirational experience.
  • Short term hosting often gives hosts and their families the chance to take part in activities with the young people they are looking after.
  • Depending on the project, it is sometime possible for young people to share rooms.
  • Specific arrangements for short-term hosting are outlined in connection with individual projects.

Relief Hosting

3
Relief hosts look after students for short periods when their long-term hosts are unable to do so. For example, should they take a short holiday. Usually this can be planned in advance. However, it is also possible, we may also call on relief hosts at short notice from time to time.

  • Having a network of relief hosts is essential in places where we support long-term students.
  • Relief hosts may provide other types of hosting, but not always.
  • It is helpful to us if relief hosts are happy to be called upon at short notice, but there is never an obligation to accept a student if offered.
  • The terms and conditions for relief hosting are usually the same as those for long-term hosts.
  • However, provided all safeguarding needs are met, there can be some flexibility of approach in situations where arrangements are made at short notice.

Student hosting is at the heart of what we do. Become a host and help create a home from home!
